Upgrade to an efficient heat pump

Why? Consider purchasing a new, efficient heat pump to replace a heat pump that is more than 10 years old. Replacing your old heat pump with an ENERGY STAR® model can save you up to 20% on your heating and cooling costs.
What to look for:
  • Highest efficiency. Heat pumps can halve your electricity consumption when compared to electric furnaces and baseboard heaters. Heat pumps also dehumidify better than central AC, leading to more energy savings and a more comfortable living space.
  • ENERGY STAR certification. Heat pumps are rated based on three factors: Heating Seasonal Performance Factor (HSPF), Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) and Energy Efficiency Ratio (EER). Look for a heat pump with at least 8.5 HSPF, 15 SEER and 12.5 EER.
  • The right size for your home.
  • A licensed, reputable contractor to install your system. For advice on how to hire a contractor, visit www.energystar.gov.

Added benefits: Heat pumps can meet your cooling needs in the summer and your heating needs in the winter, making them an efficient alternative to separate heating and cooling systems.
