Hire a contractor to test your ducts for leaks
Poorly sealed ducts can lose up to 30% of heated or cooled air before it reaches living spaces, making them a major cause for high heating and cooling bills. Leaks can also be the source of air quality problems. A professional test will alert you to any leaks so you can seal them and start saving on energy costs.
How it works:
- Ducts move air to and from a forced-air furnace, central air conditioner, or heat pump. When ducts have leaks, they prevent heating and cooling systems from doing their jobs properly, causing rooms to be too hot or too cold.
- A technician can find and measure air leakage from ducts with a series of specialized tests. One test involves measuring the air flow needed from a fan to create pressure within the duct system—leaky ducts need more air to cause a change in pressure. The blower door test depressurizes your whole house so the technician can find leaks.
- If the tests reveal major leaks in hard-to-reach places, you can hire a professional to repair your ducts. For detailed contractor selection criteria, see the ENERGY STAR® guide to duct sealing.
